The theme of the 2023 graduation exhibition of the School of Art and Humanities is “Approaches to Image,” referring to the multiple paths towards images. Gothic cathedrals were originally designed to reflect human life through stone architecture, serving as a visual encyclopedia. The cathedral’s nave is often decorated with labyrinthine tiles, symbolizing the winding and exploratory path that pilgrims take, eventually leading to the central “holy land.” The exhibition “Approaches to Image” takes the graduation theses of thirteen students from the College of Art and Humanities as its starting point and transforms textual research into a visual presentation in the form of a documentary exhibition. The distinct perspective of each student’s dissertations represents a unique path towards truth-seeking.

The exhibition will take place in the hall on the first floor of the art museum, with a labyrinthine polygonal exhibition space that echoes the central location of the hall as a “nave” of gothic cathedrals, complementing other exhibition areas to form a small linked universe of art. The top level of the display space is designed in a step-like shape resembling the Tower of Babel, symbolizing the eternal mission of the study of art history in seeking to create a visual language and find artistic truth. The labyrinth is divided into four main entrances, corresponding to multiple approaches and dimensions for exploring the truth behind images: Object, Time, Connection, and Esthesis, and also implies that the study of modern art history is becoming increasingly diverse and complex. The exhibition’s four entrances and thirteen small display spaces interlace and connect with each other to form a central core area-- “Idea”. Visitors can choose any entrance to enter the labyrinth, develop their own reading cues, and wander in the garden of knowledge.
