Key Laboratory of Traditional Heated-form Craft Technology and Digital Design

National Institute of Art Education

Design-AI Lab ("D-AI") was established in 2015. In 2021, the lab was recognized as one of the philosophy and social sciences labs by China's Ministry of Education. Under the strategy of developing a strong culture in China, and with the aim to improve and evolve cultural and art creation and cultural and creative design in the digital age, D-AI integrates the Internet of Things, perceptual computing, mixed reality and swarm intelligence network to solve the key issues relating to the content, techniques, and application of cultural designs. These can help to improve China's soft power and build D-AI into a world-class lab of design 4.0 in the intelligent era.



In May 2021, the Key Laboratory of Traditional Heated-form Craft Technology and Digital Design was recognized as a key lab by China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism.


The lab conducts research on traditional heated-form craft technology and digital design to integrate art and technology, including research on key technologies and their application. Its endeavors are focused on two areas. First, data processing in traditional ceramic craft technology. The lab focuses on key technologies, such as digital data capture, multimodal data aggregation, database building, and sample source system. Second, creative and intelligent design of traditional handmade objects. The lab zeroes in on applications such as parametric model, intelligent creation, composite materials, precision technology and numerical control.


Based in China and with a global vision, the lab aims to promote China's national cultural development strategy, carry forward traditional Chinese culture, and implement the revitalization program for traditional craft technology. Its research on data processing in traditional ceramic craft technology and creative and intelligent design of traditional handmade objects is expected to produce distinctive results on materials & thinking, creation & process, parameters & modals, and digitalization & intelligence. The lab aims to become a key facility that leads China's traditional craft technology and digital design as well as an international high-end platform for craft culture and academic exchanges.



The National University Science and Technology Park of CAA was established in 2010, as the first national university science and technology park featuring artistic creativity. The park is located in Hangzhou Zhijiang National Tourism Resort, adjacent to Xiangshan Campus, CAA. With a total planned area of about 156.73 hectares, it encompasses a core demonstration zone, an industrial development zone, and a comprehensive supporting zone.


The park is planned, developed and managed jointly by CAA and Hangzhou Xihu District (Zhijiang National Tourism Resort). Operating under a mixed university-directed, corporate and model, it aims to incubate creative businesses, commercialize creative results, and train and gather creative talents. Its endeavors will help to foster the joint development of the industries where CAA gets involved, upgrade the local economy and explore a new model for urban-rural development.



The National Institute of Art Education is the first national and interdisciplinary art education and research institute created as per the approval of China's Ministry of Education (MOE) and the opinions of Zhejiang Provincial Government, Ministry of Culture, and MOE on the joint development of CAA. It conducts art education research and consulting guided by the Department of Higher Education, MOE. On October 23 in 2016, the institute was formally established in CAA. It invites experts and scholars at home and abroad for joint research on all art disciplines.


The institute is committed to establishing art education ideology and methodology with Chinese elements, improving the advanced art education system with Chinese characteristics, elevating the level of art research and innovation in China, training great artists, and promoting international art education cooperation and exchanges, thus contributing to the country's educational undertakings.


Centered on art, the institute aims to enhance people's sensibility and innovation to redefine the interdependent relationship between art and education in the context of global civilization. Guided by the philosophy of Art/Education, it emphasizes the role of art in human creativity and knowledge system and considers in a new light the relations between art and science, art and other intelligent fields in order to develop a new science among the current university or academy system as well as figure out a new pathway for innovation in terms of thinking, knowledge and society.

Design Industry Innovation Center (DIIC)

The High-Caliber Art Talent Training Base aims to bring the educational strengths of CAA into full play and gather domestic experts and scholars to create a national team of high-caliber teachers. It also completes the major national programs of talent training to deliver high-caliber talents in art creation, art management, vocational education, intangible cultural heritage, art education, animation and cultural creativity. Besides, it works on a new Chinese humanistic education system focused on art education to help to enhance China's soft power and build a strong socialist culture in China.



The Institute of Philosophy of Art and Cultural Innovation was formerly known as the Research Center of Phenomenology of Art, which was created in 2001 and renamed the Institute of Phenomenology of Art in December 2010. The Institute of Philosophy of Art and Cultural Innovation became a potential research base of philosophy and social science in Zhejiang Province in May 2015, and was recognized as a key research base of philosophy and social science in Zhejiang in November 2017.


Basing itself in the China Academy of Art, the Institute of Phenomenology of Art works with famed artists and thinkers dedicated to phenomenology on the studies and lectures on the new areas of art philosophy and cultural innovation as well as regular or irregular art forums and exhibitions regularly. It also fosters interactions between art and ideas and emphasizes interdisciplinary integration as it is committed to creating a relationship and mechanism for theories and creations to coexist and interact. In addition, the institute gathers global resources, especially those related to core disciplines and key areas of research, to build a great platform for global cultural communication and exchange. Based on the development of world-class art education programs featuring Orientalism, the institute has completed interdisciplinary integration, improving its influence across academia. Since its inception, the institute has facilitated or led related research and academic exchanges in China and even across the globe, increasing the fame of scholarly artists and showcasing the high academic level of Chinese art research. It is committed to doctoral and postgraduate education based on practices and theories in fine arts, and has been highly acclaimed by Chinese and global academia for its endeavors and influence.



In 2018, the Base for Traditional Chinese Painting & Calligraphy, CAA was recognized as one of the first bases for carrying forward traditional Chinese culture in universities by China's Ministry of Education. The major objective of the base is to amplify the value of modern education of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy to carry forward traditional Chinese culture. The base is committed to delving into traditional culture and art to empower public art education, social education, and government decision-making. It promotes research and innovation achievements, general education, community betterment, textbook development, curriculum sharing, social practice, and art think tank among universities, primary and secondary schools, social groups, communities and towns, to facilitate the preservation, restoration, innovative development, and popularity of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. These will benefit the masses and foster the prosperity and innovation of Chinese culture.



The Design Industry Innovation Center (DIIC) is one of the first innovation centers founded by universities in Zhejiang Province under the guidance of the "Program 2011" (Program for the Elevation of Universities' Innovation Capabilities). DIIC collaborates with the Peking University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Hangzhou Municipal Government to carry out regional development research.


To meet the great need for transformation and upgrade of national and local manufacturing in China, DIIC focuses on promoting the industry and training talents, guided by "Eastern Design" ideas, motivated by cultural innovation, and powered by technology transfers and combined effects. It aims to be a model helping Zhejiang transform into a major center of manufacturing as well as a model for displaying the value of culture in today's China by further strengthening the link between culture and the industry.

The Institute of Cultural Innovation and Visual Communication was created in 2017. Based on the strong academic foundations of CAA, it closely connects with extensive educational resources at home and abroad and world-class academic forces. To become a national-level think tank, the institute contributes to making national culture and art more prosperous, meets the key needs for cultural and art development in Zhejiang, and promotes art education through cultural innovation. Amidst China's development, it is committed to visual culture construction and study on social update strategy in the new era, as part of its efforts to facilitate visual communication of culture and regional economic growth.



Zhejiang Provincial Key Lab for Healthy and Smart Kitchen System is primarily engaged in the research of basic technology for green, low-carbon and healthy kitchens, food technology for health, industrial design innovation for kitchens, and kitchen equipment production technology. This practice-oriented platform is one of Zhejiang Provincial Key Labs. It was jointly established by the China Academy of Art and FOTILE Kitchenware Co., Ltd. in 2014 and passed the acceptance test by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology in 2016.


The lab operates under the principles of openness, competition, cooperation and mobility. Combining business-directed innovation with university-directed theory practices, it gathers outstanding tech experts from home and abroad and conducts international and domestic cooperation and academic exchanges. With the basic model of project, process and objective management, the lab explores new research organizational forms and management models conducive to sci-tech innovation to improve operations management of itself as an open lab.

The China Institute for Visual Studies (CIVS) was founded in 2014, with the missions of visual expression of core values, visual innovation of Chinese culture, visual activation of traditional culture, and visual communication of national image. It fosters cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaborative innovation focused on visual traditional Chinese culture, visual modern art, and visual rural society. It works to gather top talents worldwide to build an Eastern system for visual arts with visual traditional Chinese culture as the core element, as it is committed to injecting the fine elements of Chinese culture into research, innovation, education and social services through globalization and socialization of higher education.

Zhejiang Provincial Key Lab for Healthy and Smart Kitchen System

Zhejiang Provincial Key Lab for Healthy and Smart Kitchen System is primarily engaged in the research of basic technology for green, low-carbon and healthy kitchens, food technology for health, industrial design innovation for kitchens, and kitchen equipment production technology. This practice-oriented platform is one of Zhejiang Provincial Key Labs. It was jointly established by the China Academy of Art and FOTILE Kitchenware Co., Ltd. in 2014 and passed the acceptance test by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology in 2016.


The lab operates under the principles of openness, competition, cooperation and mobility. Combining business-directed innovation with university-directed theory practices, it gathers outstanding tech experts from home and abroad and conducts international and domestic cooperation and academic exchanges. With the basic model of project, process and objective management, the lab explores new research organizational forms and management models conducive to sci-tech innovation to improve operations management of itself as an open lab.
