Tapani Hyvönen is one of the key figures of the first generation of industrial designers in Fin-land, a graduate from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland on 1974. In 1976 Tapani Hyvönen founded his first design studio Destem. Edea Design was founded in 1990. Third company, Hyvonen Design was founded 2017. Tapani Hyvönen has been in his studios as founder, CEO and President. 2014 he served as a visiting professor in Guangdong University of Technology, School of Art and Design, Guangzhou, China. From 2015 to 2020 Hyvönen was adjubct professor in International College of Fashion and Innovation, Donghua University, Shanghai. Tapani Hyvönen has been honored with several awards in Finland, including the National Art & Design Award from the Arts Council of Finland in 1984; the Industrial Designer of the Year Award of the Association of Industrial Designers TKO in 1991, and the Pro Finnish Design Award by Design Forum Finland 1992. Products designed by Tapani Hyvönen are in permanent collections of Design Museum Helsin-ki, Finland; Design Centrum Nordrhein-Westfalen in Essen, Germany, and in Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York, USA. Positions of trust in Finland include, among others, membership in the Advisory Board of the Design Leadership Program at the Department of Product and Strategic Design of University of Art and Design Helsinki in, and Presidency of The Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo. He has been a member of the Board of the Design Museum in Finland. International positions of trust include membership in the Board of International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) now World Design Organization (WDO) in 1999–2003, and again in 2009–2013. In 2010, when the City of Helsinki decided to apply for the nomination of the third World De-sign Capital, Tapani Hyvönen was one of the early initiators of the bid. He served as an active member of the Helsinki WDC 2012 Planning, and later Advisory Committee, in 2009-2013. Tapani Hyvönen has been more than thirty times a jury member in international design competitions including the red dot Award Essen Germany 2002-2022, the red dot Award Singapore 2005-2123, the Red Star China 2010 – 2017.
